SMASHsolar Wins Solar Power International 2014 Startup Competition

SMASH selected as the best of seven finalists in the SPI Startup Alley Challenge; easy-install solar power mounting system makes solar power affordable for homeowners

RICHMOND, Calif.--()--SMASHsolarTM, designer of simple, intuitive solar energy solutions, announced it has won the prestigious Solar Power International 14 Start-up Alley Challenge, besting a field of seven finalist companies. The award recognizes the innovative approach of the company’s SMASH PowerStation, a ready-to-install solar power mounting system that makes solar power a flexible, attractive and affordable option for homeowners. The Challenge judges included Martin Fornage, co-founder and chief technology officer of Enphase Energy and Scott Clavenna, CEO of Greentech Media, among others.

“It’s great to see our focus on simple and elegant solutions for contractors and homeowners being recognized and supported by industry experts. This hints at the disruption we intend to bring to the rooftop solar industry”

“The judges and audience immediately realized the value of our simple, snap-together solar modules that install twice as fast as conventional solar and require only one hour of training,” said Troy Tyler, founder and CEO of SMASHsolar. “We are honored to be chosen by the impressive panel of judges made up of industry veterans and financial experts as the best company in the Start Up Alley.”

“It’s great to see our focus on simple and elegant solutions for contractors and homeowners being recognized and supported by industry experts. This hints at the disruption we intend to bring to the rooftop solar industry,” said Neil Goldberg, co-founder and chief innovation officer of SMASHsolar.

Recently, SMASHsolar was awarded $1 million by the U.S. Department of Energy—its second SunShot Initiative Incubator award in successive years. With this new award, SMASHsolar will begin working with new strategic partners, funders, distributors and manufacturers to bring the SMASH PowerStation to market, simplifying solar power options for consumers and contractors.

The win comes two years after SMASH competed as a semifinalist in the Cleantech Open Accelerator program, the world’s largest accelerator for cleantech startups. Over the course of six months in 2012, SMASH formulated its product strategy and set its initial IP roadmap, learning from the best cleantech mentors, advisors and experts.

“We are thrilled that SMASHsolar is getting attention from industry experts and the U.S. Department of Energy,” added Rex Northern, executive director of the Cleantech Open. “SMASH is a great example of how we equip cleantech startups for success, and SMASH joins hundreds of other Cleantech Open alumni companies that have collectively raised more than $1 billion.”
