Advocate Health Care Partners with Aesynt™ to Centralize Its Pharmacy Supply Chain

Enterprise Medication Manager™ will tie together facilities with diverse pharmacy automation so that medications can be centrally viewed, managed and optimized

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa.--()--Aesynt™, a leading provider of integrated pharmacy automation solutions for hospitals and health systems, today announced that Advocate Health Care has selected Enterprise Medication Manager ™ to integrate pharmacy automation in a new centralized service center and across the health system’s 10 inpatient facilities and potentially 250 clinics, providing real-time visibility and access to all medications. After a detailed review of existing information systems, Advocate selected Aesynt based on its ability to provide inventory management capabilities to support the unique needs of Pharmacy. Through this partnership, Advocate will enhance operational efficiencies and improve patient safety by centralizing the packaging and purchasing of medications.

“We’re proud to partner with them on this game-changing medication supply chain initiative that will help take out cost while contributing to positive patient outcomes.”

Faced with increasing costs due to redundant pharmacy processes across individual hospitals, Advocate worked closely with Aesynt to launch a phased initiative to standardize its inpatient formulary and establish a centralized service center to manage medication procurement and packaging. Leveraging Enterprise Medication Manager and Aesynt’s suite of pharmacy automation solutions as the foundation for this center, Advocate will be able to manage its medication needs and inventory processes in real-time across all of their locations, rather than through disparate systems in individual hospitals. This approach will allow the organization to streamline operational efficiencies for increased overall cost savings.

“We decided to pursue the development of a centralized service center in order to maximize the performance of our pharmacy operations, better serve our patients with timely and accurate medication delivery and reduce costs,” said Dr. Rishi Sikka, senior vice president, clinical transformation at Advocate Health Care. “By incorporating enterprise-wide medication management, which will provide us with a more complete understanding of our medication inventory, we can expect to reduce costs by an estimated $3 million each year while increasing patient safety and improving outcomes.”

By incorporating Enterprise Medication Manager and Aesynt’s suite of pharmacy automation solutions in its service center, Advocate will be able to:

  • Implement a standard technology platform that provides real-time visibility and access to medications across all inpatient pharmacies;
  • Achieve a true perpetual inventory management system;
  • Improve inventory turns by 25 percent;
  • Reduce expired medications by 33 percent;
  • Reduce manual effort associated with pharmacy buyers by 50 percent;
  • Integrate with all brands of automated dispensing cabinets in the various hospitals; and
  • Centralize medication ordering and packaging

“As one of Gartner’s top-ranked healthcare supply chain organizations in 2014, Advocate is a nationally-recognized leader in employing innovative strategies to reduce costs and improve efficiencies across the enterprise,” said Kraig McEwen, CEO of Aesynt. “We’re proud to partner with them on this game-changing medication supply chain initiative that will help take out cost while contributing to positive patient outcomes.”

Advocate is targeting to go live with Aesynt’s Enterprise Medication Manager in early 2015.
